U.S. PIRG Education Fund completed early this year its second survey of BMETs on the RtR for medical devices (aka Hospital Repair Restrictions II) after having released its first report in 2020. Most of the participants reported increased equipment downtime due to repair barriers, thus causing delays in patient care, particularly in rural settings. While several states have passed RtR bills for consumer electronics, only powered wheelchairs have been included in some of those bills. The overwhelming majority of medical device repair professionals surveyed, 94%, believe that patient safety would be improved by enacting Right to Repair reforms. In this session, we’ll review the results of the survey, share updates on the progress made at state and federal levels, discuss the challenges we face, and provide suggestions on how attendees may contribute to the Right to Repair for medical devices.
